Priorities and Projects

In 2019-2020, the Committee will work across sectors to identify priority areas and projects.

Evidence-based policies and strategies will be developed to address these priorities in alignment with the Committee’s vision of building a sustainable and prosperous future for the whole region.

Areas of focus to date:

John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct

Redevelopment of the John Hunter Campus to deliver increased and improved clinical capacity and facilitate an enhanced health, education and research precinct servicing the region and Northern NSW.

Port of newcastle development and diversification

Facilitate development and diversification of the Port of Newcastle to create opportunities for new import and export trade and new supply chains by preserving infrastructure corridors and ensuring primacy of the Port.

Williamtown Special Activation Precinct

Establishment of a Special Activation Precinct (SAP) at Williamtown, incorporating an upgrade of the Newcastle Airport runway and terminal, extension of the M1 to Raymond Terrace and upgraded road links to the airport and to the Port of Newcastle.

Broadmeadow Precinct Development

Development of the Broadmeadow Precinct as a showcase residential, sports and entertainment hub.

Hunter Housing Delivery Fund

Establishment of a Metropolitan Plan Housing Delivery Fund to fast-track housing development.

Integrated Transport Plan for the Hunter

Delivery of an integrated plan to improve regional public transport and intercity connections to support future residential and economic growth.

Smart Region framework

Integrating new technology and smart thinking into the delivery of all major regional projects to build the credentials and global reputation of the Hunter as a Smart Region.
