Ready to rebuild Australia’s economy
With a population of 750,000, we are now Australia’s leading regional economy generating $60 billion in gross regional product.
The level of focus and investment in the Hunter does not reflect our size, strategic significance or economic contribution. Ultimately this comes at great opportunity cost for the nation. A cost we can no longer afford with COVID-19.
We are inviting the Australian Government to partner with us in the nation’s recovery through investing in major projects and community infrastructure that will provide scaled-up, immediate stimulus of jobs and the economy.
These projects create tens of thousands of new jobs and billions in economic benefits.
Working together to coordinate investment, the benefits of individual projects will be further multiplied. This creates a substantial investment pipeline, giving businesses the confidence to invest, expand and create new jobs.
These infrastructure priorities all enjoy the support of the region’s leaders and peak bodies. We speak with a unified voice for the Hunter.
Upgrading the Airport’s runway and terminals to accommodate long-range, wide bodied aircraft, removing a key cap on regional NSW’s access to international trade and tourism. A smart solution that aligns upgrades with Defence’s scheduled runway resurfacing, generating significant savings for taxpayers while unlocking billions of dollars in economic benefits and new jobs.
An industry-led living lab where businesses, researchers, students and trainees work side by-side developing new ideas, learning pathways, products and services with commercial application. The Hub will anchor STEMM disciplines in regional NSW, linking job ready graduates with local employers and support to create their own technology start-ups.
The project builds a world-class, highly-automated container terminal that will deliver substantial cost savings for NSW exporters and importers. It will prepare Australia for the future of container shipping and the industry’s transition to the much larger Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) now operating around the world.
Local projects create local jobs and contracts while providing confidence to businesses of a sustained pipeline of work. The councils of the Hunter have the commitment, established systems and capacity to rapidly deliver local infrastructure and scaled up economic stimulus across the region.
